# The Sample Sleuth guide gives a clear rundown on using the Power BI dashboard to track sample processing at each stage. It walks through setting global filters, viewing data summaries, and checking sample statuses. It’s a handy tool for keeping tabs on data quality and progress. By following the guide, users can better understand their sample workflows and make more informed decisions.


The Sample Sleuth Power BI dashboard can be accessed by click "**Dashboards**" and selecting "**Sample Sleuth**". Sample Sleuth will open at the **Global Filters** page.

**Sample Sleuth v2.1** now has a live connection to the DataShed5 MDS. This is demonstrated on the Help page as shown below.

> 📝 **Note:** While the Direct Query version of Sample Sleuth provides live access to your data, there may be a performance impact with charts and tables taking longer to load.

# Global Filters

It is important to set a Global Filter in order to view the sample history. Follow the numbered sequence to set the Global Filter.

Step 1. Select a **DataSet**.  
Step 2. Select a Data **Source Type**.  
Step 3a. Select to search by **Batch No** ...  
Step 3b. or by **Dispatch ID**.  
Step 4. Select a **LabCode**  
Batches from the selected LabCode will display in the Batch Number list.  
Step 5. Select the **Batch** or **Batches** you wish to review.

# Summary Tab

Click "**Summary**" to display Summary information for the selected Global Filter criteria.

This view is a data quality or progress tracking report. It displays the status of sample processing across various stages of a workflow, broken down by **Source**, **DataSet**, and several stages of sample lifecycle such as **Dispatched**, **Consigned**, **Lab Received**, **Prelim Results**, **Final Results**, and **DB Imported**.  
Across the top there are three filter options.

Dispatch ID,  
LabCode and  
Batch No.

Additional filter options are available by clicking the "**EXTRA FILTERS**" button,  
which will display an additional five filter options.  
They are: "**Prospect**", filter by one or more Prospects,  
**Lease ID**,  
**Program Type**,  
**Site Type**,  
and **Sample Type**.  
The "**Hide Filters**" button will close the Extra Filters.  
You will then be returned to the Summary page.

The "**Display**" dropdown allows the selection of status's for each **Step**.  
Options are:

**No**: Number of samples that have **not** progressed to this step.

**% No**: Percentage of total samples that have not progressed.

**Yes**: Number of samples that **have** progressed to this step.

**% Yes**: Percentage of total samples that have progressed.

It is also possible to "**Drill In**" to have a more granular view of the data.

**Steps drop down and their meaning:**

- **Dispatched**: Samples that have been dispatched from the origin.
- **Consigned**: Samples formally consigned (likely to a lab or contractor).
- **Lab Received**: Samples physically received at the laboratory.
- **Prelim Results**: Samples for which preliminary results are available.
- **Final Results**: Samples for which final, validated results have been issued.
- **DB Imported**: Final results that have been successfully imported into the database.
- **Merged**: Samples have been merged in the database.
- **QC Accepted**: Samples have passed QC Rules.
- **Ranked**: Samples have been Ranked in the database.

The data can be viewed in several different ways, as outlined.  
Make your selection and the view will refresh.

# Summary by Date

Click the "**Summary by Date**" tab.  
The "**Summary by Date**" view presents data on the number of samples processed through various stages over time.

Select how to group data in the Summary table below this list.  
Summary table grouped by "**Program Type**".  
Select the Steps to display in the chart.  
Hover over a column stack section to display the identity and either Drill Up or Drill Down.  
The chart will Drill into the column stack section, providing a more granular view of the data.

The "**Table**" tab displays the same data in a table format.  
The table has drill down functionality. Clicking the + will expand the data row.

# Find Sample Tab

Select "**Find Sample**" to open the "**Find Sample**" view, which displays the status of each stage for every sample.

Click the "**Focus Mode**" button to display the view in full screen.  
Right click on a Sample and select "Drill Through". There are two options, Sample Details or Batch Details.  
Here a Sample has been selected. The sample status shows dates and time at each stage.  
Below, icons show the status of each stage.  
This can be switched to Dates if preferred.
